Jacobs was a dedicated police officer, investigator and supervisor for many years, but is well aware that police investigations are sometimes flawed and need a "second look" by experts who will competently review cases for those flaws and seek new avenues of investigation and alternate theories of the crime. Lt. Jacobs offers the defense the help it needs to critically examine the police case. Through innovation and self-motivation, Lt. Tommy Jacobs began a career in criminal investigations in 1971 first as a detective, then as a sergeant (1984) over the Violent Crimes Unit (high-profile murders, cold cases and police-involved shootings), and finally as a lieutenant in charge of all major personal crimes investigations (1987-1996).

During that quarter-century, Tommy Jacobs became knowledgeable in all areas of criminal investigation including, but not limited to, crime scene evaluation, analysis and reconstruction; evidence collection and analysis; interrogation and interview techniques of suspects and witnesses; use of polygraph examinations; criminal profiling; case investigation review, critique and analysis; recorded statements; courtroom testimony; and testimony as an expert witness.

During the years of command and supervision of criminal investigations, Lt. Jacobs was trained at the FBI National Academy and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration.

Lt. Jacobs is a published author of The Stringbean Murders, which chronicles the 1973 murders of a noted Grand Ole Opry star, David "Stringbean" Akeman, and his wife, Estelle. The book and the investigation were featured on the A&E Network in an episode of City Confidential in 1997. In 2005, Lt. Jacobs conducted a presentation of the case and investigation as a part of the continuing education requirements for the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education.

Since retiring from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in 1996, Lt. Jacobs has conducted private investigations for CNA Insurance Company as a Fraud Investigator and civil and criminal investigations for clients and attorneys throughout the Southeast, including current homicides, questioned deaths and other types of criminal cases.

Lt. Jacobs developed the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department's Investigator Training Program and Manual and trained many of the department's most noted criminal investigators. The program and manual remain in use today.
